It was fortunate that I found an angel by mistake. Unfortunate that he was already 18 years old and barely in my life for those first 18 years. A 4½ hour drive laid claim to the blame of my absence; 4½ hours. He’s my nephew. Clearest eyes I have ever seen. Brightest smile in the valley. I watched as he accepted the Governor General’s Award for academics at his graduation. Later that night he and a few band mates played some wicked punk rock music till the wee hours of the morning at the after grad party. I lost consciousness somewhere around 3am. He kept on playing.
Josh will be attending university, 20 minutes away from my home, in the fall. I will be much closer to him and his sister who also is living 20 minutes from my house. Keeping close to them will be as much for me as it is for them.
I have to keep an eye out for these angels. 4½ hours will no longer keep me away from one.
